I was commissioned by US-based author, Sonny Evans, to illustrate and design his children’s picture book, Books Don’t Need Batteries.
In a world besotted with electronic devices, Books Don’t Need Batteries makes a case for the timeless value of books and reading them. It introduces readers to Paige, a living book, ready to share her story. That is, until Sal comes along – a sentient mobile device too impressed with its own features to let Paige’s words flow. Eventually, Paige figures out how to stand up to Sal’s bullying, and delivers her message; books will always be special, even when, and especially because, books don’t need batteries!
To create the visual world that Sonny wanted for his story – simple, colourful and textured pictures – I digitally layered pencil, ink and watercolour drawings. And, I applied texture and colour to help define the main characters’ personalities, including using hundreds of coloured squares (‘pixels’) to highlight Sal’s electronic energy. A most enjoyable project!
