My cover art for Laura E. Goodin’s second book, Mud and Glass was commissioned by Odyssey Books.

This title is both a hilariously on-target satire of academia and a stirring fable of resistance in the face of a nascent totalitarian regime. It’s an adventure story where the geeky heroes battle equally geeky villains, and courage comes in the most unexpected forms.

My final cover art uses a comic-book aesthetic to amp-up both the adventure and satire element; a look and feel that Laura thought would work best. The scene depicts the three main characters escaping a hovering, blazing helicopter, which has just been shot by a bazooka. So much fun! The bold colours and strong lines are key to this comic-style execution, and the dominant purple and yellow is a little nod to early Phantom comics.

I drew the pictures by hand (graphite, ink pen), then coloured them digitally.
